How many have been burned when paying a Contractor 50% upfront?

Just wondering ...

I had a recent bad experience with a plumber that somehow convinced me that the 50% upfront and 50% at end was on the up and up.

Upfront $$ is the kiss of death. I will maybe pay materials upfront (or better yet, buy them myself) but will never pay labor of any amount in advance. I've been burned too many times.
