I usually just install a CO/smoke combo on all floors while making sure they sleeping area one(s) cover all and that works just fine with the inspectors.

But the rent I'm receiving fits my model, and the family can live their lives and not be upended.

I don't care either way: like you said, if that's how you want to do it that's fine.
