For our basement unit we only have two but that is because we do the laundry right away as we live above so there is always a spare in case of an emergency.

If you want to house hack make sure it cash flows when you move out, you can afford your portion of the payment after rental income, that it's in a good area, and you have an emergency fund ready and you'll do fine!
