We think the best way to go about this is to look for a property in a surrounding suburb but within 20-30 mins of downtown/ UMN campus as we work downtown and most of our friends are still in school.

The amount of competition I see for multi-families within San Antonio and the surrounding areas today is pretty insane. 

@Noriel Martinez Hey I like real estate as much as the next guy, but if you can make that much with ATM’s and you already have the existing infrastructure, you should seriously consider using your money to expand that business.

Being new to these strategies, we are in need of guidance and have a good friend and mentor who is more than willing to help but is shifting his efforts from Seattle to Arizona (Phoenix and surrounding areas).   

For example, I purchased a property because of good economics and turns out in 5 years it was surrounded by major tech and business centers followed by a lot of residential development which tripled in value and doubled rents.

Historically, Edmond is on average a higher priced area than any of the surrounding towns in the OKC Metro. 

If I were in your shoes, before looking to go out of state, I would surround myself with local investors and some of them will be investing out of state and others will be house hacking multis like you describe.  

That being said, the main things I’m considering are: 1) finding a personal residence near Austin, and 2) start off building a rental property portfolio in the surrounding areas.

Also, because this was a nicer rental home with premium rent prices, I had a drone video made of the surrounding village area and how my home fits in.
