Are there any year ranges of properties that you would avoid for difficulty of updating and rehabbing, i.e. years where lead paint were issues, years where certain building materials where outlawed etc?

That can range...my Mom completed a couple herself a few years ago and it cost ~$1,500 including City fees and survey costs.

So far I have a real estate agent and have been working on getting pre-qualified for a loan so I can get a good idea of what price range to look in.

Whatever those sell for, it'll be around that range.
