First, leverage house hacking, which allows you to live in one unit of a multi-family property while renting out the others to cover your mortgage.

Reason being is because my brother-in-law is out there who can help out whether house hacking a duplex, tri, or even a quad. 2 question: 1.

My plan is to self-manage the property and rent out the duplex as an STR.   

After 2 years of renting it out we tried selling it to make our money back at no profit but not selling at that price over the summer ($500k), we bought it at $380k and put in $100k of reno's.
