As has been pointed out, there are great differences between service dogs (which have been specifically trained to provide some type of service to a disabled individual) and "emotional support" animals (which have been trained to do nothing except be companions to individuals WHO HAVE BEEN DETERMINED TO NEED SUCH BY THE APPROPRIATE MEDICAL PROFESSIONAL.While a landlord cannot ask the tenant the nature of their disability, they can require that the tenant provide the appropriate documentation from the medical professional of the need for the emotional support animal.
