While not so much in residential work (except for sidewalks), very often control joints are added to the concrete to essentially "control" where the concrete cracks (i.e., attempting to force the shrinkage cracking to follow the control joint to it looks orderly and straight).

I asked my HVAC guy about this once and he said used units generally fall into two categories: either salvaged, working, from a site for some reason - house being torn down, storm damage, unit too big/small for the house - or the unit was a lemon and replaced because of constant problems.

We also make sure that there are grooves on the joints where the floorboards meet (this gives a greater impression of real hardwood, beveled edges in other words).
