In northern California (even in the East Bay), it can cost upwards of $250/sf to build new construction, and you won't be able to get pretty much anything done for $10/sf, and probably won't be able to get much done for $30/sf.Material costs on the west coast are higher, insurance costs in CA are through the roof, regulation is crazy and lots of other stuff contribute to the high costs -- but it all boils down to the fact that prices are much, much higher in California than most of the country.I actually disagree with the $10/$20/$30 even in cheaper parts of the country

@Brian TurnboughI like your response. i certainly agree that if it is done ethically and fair, there is nothing wrong with charging or paying for knowledge, i mean, just look at the tuition debt in this country, it is outrageous. on common grounds, I have a small child and i will spend the rest of my days teaching him as much as i know.

There are several around the country who will extend the EMD funds upfront, and who are paid back out of escrow = no out of pocket on your part.

Different areas get different amounts of sun each year, which means you may require more or less panels depending on where you live- and this can vary from neighborhood to neighborhood, not just state to state.For example say a family uses 700kwh a month, in order to build a PV system that will produce that much, it may take ~12 panels in an area like Ewa Beach here on Oahu (the highest sun zone in the country) but it may take ~30 of the same type panels in a place like Seattle.
