If its not a high end unit a minimum approach would be to paint the wall with an oil based gloss paint.

You will still need two top coats to achieve the true color, but it will cover no matter what's under there.Exterior - Cabot's Problem Solver primer - it covers everything as well, but its an oil based exterior paint so not available in all states.

Also you should have Menards if you still live in Michigan nearby I'd think - they have some amazing deals on some of their stock Moen tub/shower faucets -- I've been going with the spot resist stainless -- think it's a little less faddish than Oil Rubbed Bronze.
