paint for covering dark colors
I would rather not have 2 coats of primer and 2 coats of paint to go over dark purple and greens, I had a painter mention there is a paint out that truly does cover in one coat with these dark colors. Does anyone experienced with a product where this is true? If so, please let me know the name.

This may ruffle a few feathers, but IMHO Zinnsser BIN2 or Zinnsser 123 are much better coverall primers than Kilz.
However, if you do not have any bleed through stains or knots (on wood) Zinnsser BIN/BIN2 or Kilz stain covers are overkill. To change from a deep paint colour, all you need is a good bodied primer which is amenable to being tinted (should say on the label) and tint your primer to your new wall colour (or close). If you want a specialized primer, Zinnsser Deep Tint is an option (If you are a Kilz person, they likely have one as well ... so would most paint brands).
I'm afraid you will need a minimum of 2-coats, likely three (primer + 2 top coats).
This is we use standard paint palettes and charge tenants to restore to our colours if they paint ... Royal velvet might look cool to a 20-something Goth, but it can be 4 coats of paint to get it back to Magnolia Spray ;-)
