If you both agree when you split then you can change the agreement and do whatever you agree to do.I like the self help legal books from Nolo Press.

However, you'll be hard pressed to see much (or any) appreciation.

In CA the Counties would have kept the windfall of $ and found some pressing uses for it. 

It can get tiring especially when many properties may not meet your requirements, but keep pressing on; eventually you will find one that does fit your criteria, make sure you are prepared to make an offer right away as it is likely that you are not the only one that thinks it's a good deal. 

Just from a pure market standpoint, your are going to be hard pressed to find worthwhile duplex/single family homes in your price range from Greater Worcester -> East Mass.

Doing that should give you the warm fuzzy you need to press forward.
