@Amanda Dobbs, I have a wire mesh on an electronic thermostat/timer in my personal home.

But I do know when I let the heating and cooling people come to change the thermostat couple of month before I sold it, I let them checked on the unit.

I installed programmable thermostats and set them to 72 degrees.

If not check thermostat wire for voltage between the two. if you're comfortable with electric, open the taco zone relay box and make a jumper wire with thermostat wire.

Adding a camera system (outside only), wifi touchpad lock, wifi thermostat, etc are some of the simple solutions. 

If has add on devices for monitiring.I use Honeywell 9000 wifi thermostats.

I live in a multi family house and we have two meters but only one thermostat.
