I'm going to disagree emphatically with @Steve Morris if you are in the wrong, tenants (and most (non-disordered) people) will respect you, if you apologize and fix the problem.

It's a different strategy that involves two separate contracts (lease and Option), that should never mention the eachother in their respective contracts.
