I agree that it really is too bad and will have its consequences on the tourism market, as there are many that are able to visit here simply because of the availability and affordability of short term rentals.

When visiting places on vacation it's always tempting to look at real estate prices and talk to people who own there.Often times, owners will talk about the amazing appreciation they have experienced. 

Short answer is "Yes" :) Some listing agents will permit a visit with a GC.

There is a huge demand for short term rentals in Austin, and the Type 1 (owner occupied) short term rentals are not going to meet the demand for the travelers wanting to visit there.
