I generally don't set a number I look at credit history for lower scores if it is a medical issue I will view differently than if you just are overburdened by debt and just not paying.  

@Tim McCarthy if you are thinking mid term in mass you  need to look at commute.

You don't really know what you can afford or what's reasonable or if you're even able to qualify until you have a lender look over your income, assets, and credit.
