If their criticism isn't based on logic, and your mom crying seems to suggest its more emotional, then you just have to understand that its probably not sound investment (or life) advice.I think your parents will be ok but it may take some time.

For my clients that can't handle that bit above about the price of an answer being an appraisal fee, I point them to turnkey full retail price recently renovated homes where you're not so much investing as you are competing with the emotions of other buyers.
