(Insurance departments in several states have put some restrictions on that process due to abuses by contractors in that area).You should have the contactor(s) you will use review the property and the insurance companies proposed payout to make sure they can do the work for that amount.

It is not unusual for a GC to deal with the Insurance company, but you want to make sure that the proposed specific scope of work repairs and work actually done is both documented, necessary and fully approved in writing for payment by the insurance company prior to starting work.
