So, a vast amount of computing resources and engineering time were needed to maintain a product to solve a problem that did not exist. 

The best way to do this IMO is to project out the financials using reasonable assumptions and compute the IRR ... then make sure you have multiple profitable exit strategies you can choose from at any point in time in case your projections are off.
