I've heard good things about Lebanon, given similar blue collar work in that area.

You can easily pick up a SFH or 2-flat n Logan Square for instance, for around $300k and be close to the blue line to get to work. 

There are other "blue collar" areas that are low crime, decent schools, median price range, and when we can get them at a discount make perfect rentals!
