The standard advice these days is to use silicone everywhere there's a corner or a joint, a change in plane.Of course, under the tile of a modern tile-on-cement-board surround your builder should have at least hit the corners with non-woven fabric and waterproofing compounds like RedGard or HydroBarrier, but that's still hit and miss.
