Why waste time trying to refinish cabinets that old? 

The construction will likely require some access to the upper unit (electrical, shared wall repairs, etc.) but we have the flexibility to host some short-term rentals in the upper unit for supplementary income in between construction projects; we're not expecting it to cash flow during renovations. 

It seems like the modern toilet is wasteful of water and expensive to hook up to sewer.

Though I did go back with all vintage door knobs, doors, rewired old light fixtures and custom built a few from scraps, and used the plank kitchen floor (unsalvageable due to rot) as the wall in the hallway.

If you think load bearing (these are usually exterior walls) were modified that's a little more rare, you might need an engineer. 

They would rather waste to postage and call.You can get on their list for most any reason, just the right neighborhood they invest in, an unkempt yard or exterior, tax bills sent to a different address, etc.
