In other words are the reasons for paying off debt early financial or emotional?

Besides having your name on the annual report, if you are seeking financing on the property, your name is going to be on the mortgage/deed of trust.

I asked my old tax guys (who is retired) he suggested claiming it in 2023, but he was on the fence about it.
