Carpet should last more than 1-2 years but I'd replace with some sort of pre-finished hardwood or even tile if possible.

(that kind of points to an interest in this type of work).What do you want to learn, to paint, to install kitchen flooring, kitchen cabinets, to shingle a roof, to replace windows, to residing a house, to install a new bathroom with attractive tile and a big mirror, build a deck, patch plaster, etc...How are you with tree trimming, or digging holes to put bushes in....

There are variable costs such as what a low/med/high end kitchen (Formica vs quartz, home depot kitchen set vs custom, white appliances vs viking, etc),  quality of tiling and fixtures in bathrooms), and then hourly cost of labor and the estimated days it will take to complete.
