Non traditional financing has higher risks for whomever is willing to lend, therefore lender would want to be compensated for higher risks (for example if someone cannot demonstrate the ability to repay, underreported self-employed income, too many properties, not enough income on paper to sustain multiple mortgage - to name a few).

A fair housing claim wont get you the place, likely won’t get you monetary compensation, and will take months if not years to play out.

Both in landlording and in life, you will see time and time again that a person who is in the wrong will often become angry at their victim. 

My guess is that the landlord should or will need to provide some kind of compensation at this point.

Then you can negotiate compensation for day-to-day management.
