Of course I'm sure some folks would tell you "oh, I have a guy and I can do additions for only $70/sqft" or others who claim if you're paying less than $150/sqft your work is shoddy.

I would take it to small claims court.

They have charged me for fees that are a surprise on my statement - and when I ask them about it - they claim that my last account administer (who has since left the company) told them that I had approved it but never did the due diligence of double checking with me.

We are also currently house hacking our SFH, renting out rooms, claiming everything on schedule E as we should, getting to deduct our mortgage interest and depreciate our house.

Theoretically, if all that has been done, and he doesn't rent you the unit because your brother told him not to, you could sue him in small claims court for the cost of moving your possessions to storage and a hotel room. 

And expect the underwriter to ask for docs supporting some of those claims.
