I would suggest you attend some real estate group meetings in NYC and gain some exposure to the area your thinking of getting into.

I know he holds a monthly meet up in Santa Cruz.Although I live here, I only attend SJREI when they have Bruce Norris, Sean O'Toole or some high profile individuals as guest speakers.
