My brother has been very successful as of late and has inspired me to learn the business.  

I should admit that one of the reasons I take the approach I do is that my wife's grand plan for keeping our children (and eventual grandchildren) close by is to give them each a house.  

Eventually looking to invest in California, but elsewhere to start (LA appears to be very expensive and as such rental returns don't inspire!).
