I never got any real concrete answers from the question but have had good luck just meeting and networking with fellow BP members.

Second question the back patio is in rough shape in certain areas, I really don't want to jack hammer up the whole patio, has anyone resurfaced concrete?

The surveyors locate all the corners, and note fence lines, concrete slabs, etc

You will find brand new people to the game and those that have been polished with years of experience, both good and bad.

They use mostly concrete block construction with very little if any attic spaces like you would typically find in US wood stick construction but they seem to work very well and last a long time with little maintenance and they are relatively cheap.

I do think it's helpful to have an ideal end goal in mind, but definitely focusing on the concrete plan rather than a vaguely conceptualized goal is the way to go. 

Just took up some commercial carpet that was in the kitchen(yes the kitchen) of a rental I just got and it was glued down to the concrete.
