I have self directed retirement plans and have researched a lot about them, however the below is in no way legal or tax advice so consult with a professional for your specific situation.Your i401K and you are two separate taxable entities, as such anything bought in the i401K has no bearing on your tax situation.

...If this were a short sale, then the letter might have some bearing in getting the bank to agree to the discount.But for REO properties, the banks really only want to see offers; your explanations and justifications for low offers on REO will fall on deaf ears at the bank.
