If you win the bidding on a $2,300 lien, your bid is cancelled since you don't have enough money.You have to pay the balance of what you owe for liens you win in 24 hours - again via ACH (some counties may accept wires).

I really like the fact that they pre-fund their investments, meaning that if the investment stinks and no one funds it, they will be stuck with it on their balance sheet.

You need to understand and follow the rules.The only way you can access your 401k funds to invest in YOUR project is by taking a loan from the plan, which would be limited to $50K or 50% of the balance, whichever is less.401k can invest in its own projects or someone else's, the rules prohibit any transaction between the plan and Disqualified Person.
