@Taylor L.Actually you do not need a custodian with the Solo 401k plan, it is not required unlike with SD IRA. 401k plan/trust can be setup with account holder being the trustee/plan administrator thus eliminating a middle man (custodian) and all related fees that come with it, not to mention red tape, delays and inconvenience. 

Or you can have it set up so that it goes directly to both you and the maintenance person.

I have only encountered a small inconvenience when trying to set up my automatic payments.

But your spouse needs to be on board with the idea, but just do it for a couple of years and you will be set up for the future. 

One would think that the market would at some point rebalance to make it more attractive to choose this model as a reward for giving up flexibility and the potential comfort in being able to set up camp permanently.
