If you self-manage and do repairs on your own, you are saving money but trading your time to do it (paying yourself normal rate to do repairs).

I found that they are only traded over the counter (OTC) which means each deal is custom, as opposed to trading like commodities on an exchange.

I have already spoke with some GCs and trades and have a good idea of who I will use depending on where I can find the right deals.  

With stocks and many other investment vehicles, I have no control whatsoever over how those investments are perceived by the market.
