For the house we are doing in Capo Beach, just for a fence, because of the soils, and the small amount of dirt that has to be retained from the lot next door, they are making us put in a 5' wide footing, for a fence!!

If you want to live in the place long-term, maybe approach a long lease vs. the ownership angle.  

Real estate provides that consistency, and an asset that is secured by something real, not digital.Where you can really maximize both angles is with a self directed IRA or 401k.  

I looked at how the economy performed on a wide variety of fronts (job growth, median incomes, population growth, etc) in the downturn.
