I've left specific instructions to not sell the properties and do something dumb and buy a Ferrari or blow it on expensive vacations (but I guess if I'm dead and they do that, they'll suffer the financial consequences later).

There are a handful of creative, alternative options out there but I think the bottom line is that sometimes the city will allow people to get easements or share sewer lines if they deem that to be the most reliable and cost effective option.
