You can't say that this was a positive thing to own if the sale of the property is trying to catch up to the accumulated cost of owning that property at the time of sale...and you don't catch up and pass the costs with the proceeds from the sale.Yes, you can say by its pure definition that the property is an asset as it stands, however, for this conversation as an investment, it is not an asset since the value of that asset as an investment must be measured from the beginning of ownership to the end...otherwise, there would be no problem as an investor to pay cash upfront and sell the property for less than you paid for it.
