As an example, I was recently able to get the county to change and include the screened in porch to official heated living space on an investment property.

The space is very small so I only allow small dogs or cats.

Look for markets with growing populations, growing jobs, modern/diverse economies in landlord friendly states. 

How much will it cost to convert the basement to additional living space or another apartment?

And on top of that in NYC when it is mixed use it is hard to get a loan unless you are actually going to be using the space for your own business.

So we know there must be issue will all these systems but the house fits my family needs and we can turn additional space into an apartment for rental.What option do we have besides walking away ?
