I'm not really sure how to get access to my account but I can figure that out when the time comes it is serviced through John Hancock.What I'm hoping for some suggestions on is where is the best place to transfer the money to start a new self-employed retirement account that I can contribute some of my REALTOR® commissions to and start saving.I'm most interested in steady returns which is why i'm leaning towards index funds.

While I waited I did the opposite and stuck nearly all of my capital into equities with close to the same balance as you, I used the broad index as my saving account which paid off quite a bit.Househacking in NYC or even parts of NJ was a struggle for me because I couldn't find a deal that I was really satisfied with.

Another idea is to open a brokerage / investing account with whichever company also holds your 401k money, and put your "savings" into a total market index fund or into the S&P 500 or some other index fund that spans multiple industries.

Depending on amounts and how often you use the funds, you may want to be more aggressive with a portion of it and invest some of it into some stock index funds as well.
