I list on AirBnB and VRBO, although 90% of my traffic comes from AirBnB.I’ve been running a STR for 3 years now (Carlsbad, California) and it does great.

Houston might be an ugly, traffic congested city without an exciting past so it won't get a lot of hype, but it is the most diverse city , easy to work with regulations and is not going to stop growing in any direction.

You have easy access to beaches, mountains (skiing and hiking), awesome restaurants (Portland was named 2018 Restaurant City of the Year by Bon Appetit in 2018), a fantastic craft beer scene, far less traffic than found in some of the other states and also affordable!
