I know the news shows the cities desperate for medical personnel, but in many places the surge has not hit.

One way of knowing if you can make good money is to know if your state requires a occupational license like Realtors, Electrician, Etc... otherwise any body can claim to be an inspector. 

I will soon take up a Medical Laboratory Scientist travel job with the intent to fund more real-estate buying and achieve my ultimate goal of not having to trade time for money.

It's not the matter of the $2k in refund, it's asking the IRS to take a closer, deeper look at last year's return because some of your deductions that you claimed weren't warranted and thus you got a better refund than you should have received.
