I believe you are stuck with no planning, you should be planning at least 2 weeks ahead with what you want them to do, not "oh you need to do this tomorrow", give them 3 days of worth so they know how to prioritize, that is why you hire someone with a brain and let them choose their maximum productivity.

Doing this long enough has taught me, the number that came out of your mouth will get stuck in the customer's brain, even you say lots contingencies afterwards, the customer will remember none of those words.
