Mechanic's liens can be effective if applied in the right way and the attorney handling them effectively applies pressure to the debtor. 

I suppose it's possible the water is just trapped in the basement but it would be unusual that hydrostatic pressure couldn't just push it out of any crack or seam in the basement between the walls and floor or through wall joints/cracks.

If you haven't overextended yourself there is more fallback to make a mistake, which, ironically, reduces your chance of making  "under pressure"  istakes.
