I would not personally hold on to a property that has equity if the cash flow is very low/negative unless I was in an area where there was massive appreciation potential.

Although with an increase in construction costs (concrete, drywall, lumber etc), shortage of qualified labor and increased land development costs I see the spec builders pulling back, mainly due to tighter margins/risk.
