You are much better off with a poured concrete foundation, and electric heat should usually have no issues if the wiring is well done.

I'm hopeful with our combined savings and possibly her dad or other private lenders, and my construction skills and time, we can start to lay the right foundation for our future.

My recommendation would be to read all you can, get a basic foundation of understanding on what it is you are interested in, and the come back to the forums and ask questions to refine/improve your knowledge and fill in the gaps.Then, IF you still have questions at that point or need help putting it all into practice, try to find a mentor.

I think it's important to keep that goal/reason in mind as it provides grit, the foundation for success.  

More than the financial aspect it has created, it has taught me a lot more lessons along the way that I know will be much more valuable in the long run. 1) Allowed me to go in relatively blind into a deal and have the confidence that with my foundation I will make it work no matter what.
