He mentions in the podcast that he has his contractor submit an invoice for the full cost of renovations to the escrow company.

Absolutely deduct the damage they caused from their deposit and send them an invoice for the rest (if damage is over $700).

We've discussed this mindset before, but it's just so dang obvious when attending those meetings over and over in person.
