My gut says it would be very difficult to claim the material participation and hours needed (and have them hold up in an audit or tax court) when you are both out of state and a full-time working professional.

I'm in Indiana, and there are notice requirements within 6 months of the auction, notice requirements after the 1-year redemption period has ended, optional (but often a good idea) payment of property taxes during the redemption period, recording of title search/notice expenses with the county, a court hearing, and then submitting a court order to the county auditor.
