Garage apartment, converted garage, mother in law suite, guesthouse, casita, etc.

My wife and I are looking to assume control over my mother-in-law's duplex and need to remove the current tenant in order to add a bedroom and bathroom onto that side of the property. 

pre pandemic i used to go there at least once a year and my mother in law used to go about 6+ times/yr, so i thought it would be a good place to have a 2nd home type of thing. 

I’ve been reading Dave Ban Horn’s book called Note Investing, and I’d prob start in performing notes (when he said this is something his 85-year old mother does I thought yes!

@Bobby Larsen so no first hand experience with actual money in Albuquerque but my father and step mother have owned property there along with my siblings.

Either build a home on a lot near the beach or look for a home do the BRRR w/house hack method while both would have a build-in a mother in law suite financed either with a VA loan or FHA.

I called a reference once "his mother" and asked if he would be a good tenant? 

Have the husband/wife sign the lease as the lessee , while the mother just as residence on the lease.

Do what your Father tells you to do, without complaining.If he wants you to get up at 6:30 am and go with him to paint walls--just do it like a soldier--even if breakfast has to be missed.In other words, even if you are tired and having a bad day...do what you are assigned to do--and get it done--on time--on budget--in a workmanlike (not kid) manner (without complaining).Show your Father you are man enough to handle things like a man--without quarreling with him, or dragging your feet.Learn to do that, and you guys will be a formidable team--and your Mother will be impressed.Good Luck!

If you plan on staying in Fort Lauderdale long term, you may want to find a house you can house-hack or that has a mother in law quarter.
