With my self and only two other employees...we had a battle to fight up hill.Our normal contractors jacked up prices...lots of stories here, but our electrician for instance, who at the time had done 38 houses for us, went from a normal 10k full re-wire on a house like this, to bidding OUT OF NOWHERE $22,000!!

They are not required to have workers comp for themselves or relatives who work with them, but claim to have it for their employees, or that the guys that help them are also independent contractors.

You make yourself an employee of the S-Corp (Pres / CEO or Manager, for example) and pay yourself using the salary / dividend split to limit your employment taxes (SUTA, FUTA, FICA, worker's comp.).

You don't give them directions on what to do at any given time, you give them a scope and they do what they want with that, if you tell them to get materials from here and install it there, that does is already an employee and not independent contractor.
