You can drive around your desired areas, look for parcels that have been sitting for a long time, appear dilapidated, etc and then find out who owns the property by searching for a "Parcel Viewer" online in your area if you don't know the address.e.g.

There's a lot of risk in building for the bank and when the build is done and sold, their loan closes, so at best they're earning interest for a year or so, making the loan less desirable than other products.
