My contractor brought me a deal (which requires work on the house which I would of course have him do despite him not being the most cost effective bid) and I had mentioned to him previously that I pay a finders fee.

In an absolute worst case scenario you could just approach contractors and tell them the scope of the work (and that you want them to do the work for you) without telling them that it's already done.
